My relationship with our daughter is different from my husband's relationship with her. My husband is sterner, yet at the same time more likely to spoil with privileges and presents. She minds him immediately, while pushing the obedience boundaries with me.
There are lots gender free toys for children--just not at Toys R Us, Walmart, Target, etc. For example, I have a set of wooden Froebel blocks in my classroom. They are over 30 years old and they have enchanted children for years. They are the favorite items in my classroom with both boys and girls. And boys and girls do play together with them. They build clever environments, houses, castles, towers, and the list goes on and on. They often use the small wooden blocks as a telephone and call mom or a friend. And yes the curved ones have been pistols and the long ones automatic rifles. Sometimes they are dolls, babies, mommies, daddies, big brothers and little sisters and other times they are used as skates, guitars, drums.........................................

You bring up an interesting point. In my experience parent chaperones are pretty equally divided, but it's interesting that that hasn't been your experience. I do agree that you can't always include everyone on your kid's birthday list. I also see how making a gender specific party makes drawing the line much easier. It's the message that it sends about gender based exclusion and gender segregation that I worry about.....it's tricky though. I really do see it from multiple sides.

Great post. I have been known to yell "Inappropriate" while searching for the remote many times in my house. I wish there was a book that was filled with ways to talk to kids about the messages they are getting. It is so hard to come up with what to say on the fly when those teachable moments arise.

Ah, that might help me too. My blog is pretty unfocused and I'm struggling with that. Although I like not being in niche (like having decide between have a writer's blog or a mom blog), it does make it all a bit chaotic! I might think about a schedule!

I've been thinking on your post further, especially as I make preparations for my own daughter's birthday party (her first friend party). I still believe kids can pick and choose who to invite. I am interested in the parent role in the party. At the parties I've taken my daughter to, fathers are rarely present except maybe the birthday child's dad. I'm the one tasked with organizing my daughter's party. So my question is, why do adults separate out the child rearing chores along stereotypical gender lines? Why is mom the party planner?
